The Theme Anchor

Main idea tells what happened. Theme tells what the story teaches about life.

Sample Text

Kofi spent weeks building a wooden racing kart, but he rushed the final step and forgot to tighten the wheel bolts. During the big neighborhood downhill race, his kart took an early lead, but a wheel flew off at the final turn, causing him to lose. Kofi was disappointed, but he smiled, walked over to the winner, shaking his hand while planning how to rebuild his kart properly next time.

Main Idea

Main Idea = Specific details + Characters. Ask: What literally happened?

Theme

Theme = Universal truth + Real-world application. Ask: What does this teach us about life?
